Life of Labor 02.jpg
Seasonal workers - mostly migrating from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida - toil in Michigan fields to earn wages that are often below the poverty level. They come to the Imlay City area of Michigan (between Flint and Port Huron) each summer to pick, hoe and pack fruits and vegetables. I was amazed at how quickly I was accepted into their lives. After spending my first morning in the fields with them, Carman invited me inside to have lunch with her family. These photographs were made for The Flint Journal during the summer of 1989.
